Mauchline Ware was produced in the Victorian era to cater for the growing demand for souvenirs. Named after the Ayrshire town of Mauchline, skilled woodworkers began making wooden snuff boxes in the late 18th century from local sycamore trees and soon branched out into other items of homeware. At its peak the company made almost 200 different products ranging from napkin rings, trinket boxes and card holders to tea caddies and bookmarks. The last Mauchline factory closed in 1933 after a fire.
